Media is the way to know the world, what will happen if media misleads us. We will get a wrong image of a country or the world. China’s CCTV, Xinhua agency is a good example.
Recently, I did a study on how Taiwanese media report corruption-related news at mainland China. Most people are curious to ask, “Why you select this topic? China has corruption, Taiwan also has!” I asked them, we all know Chen Shui Bian Corruption case, media will continue report it, the relevant officials step down, or prosecution, if anyone gives information about the hidden power, the media will report and re-investigate. However, anyone saw a CPC corruption scandal reported more than two days? Or even, recall any Taiwanese media report a CPC corruption case recently.
The answer is: no one can answer it. Many people will say: I heard media reports how the China's rapid development, many Taiwanese businessmen successfully make money from their investment in China; also often heard report about mainland China’s Unconscionable food, sometimes, few news of Taiwanese businessmen killed. But really have no report about CPC’s any major corruption scandal; is the phenomenon a very serious issue?
Last year, the Paris based think-tank institution "the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development" (OECD) has published a report that, in the first half of 2003, there were 8,300 Chinese officials have fled to United States. Another 6,500 officials have hidden who suspected of corruption, in order to avoid legal punishment in China. The report states that “about 2 / 3 officials are senior directors of state-owned enterprises; the amount of illegal money they took is about 8.75 billion dollar to 500 billion dollar."
We certainly do not completely trust the accuracy of this figure, however, from the relevant information we can find, China's corruption problem is not just a serious social issue, and the accumulation of grievances have been unthinkable. For example, according to official statistics published by the decade of 1993-2003, there are 10000 public protest events each year in China, the significant increase year by year, 2003 has 60000, in 2004, broke out 74000 activists protest event (each event is at least more than 100 protesters), the number of participants is expected to reach 3.6 million. By 2005, as high as 85000, an average of more than 200 a day!
Therefore, OECD pointed out that rampant corruption is threatening the legitimacy of CPC’s ruling. The widespread corruptions in China becomes a serious source of social discontent, it is the current formation of the major element of unrest in Chinese society, and pose a threat to the CPC’s regime.
However, my research found that in 2005, Taiwanese TV has no report on CPC corruption case! Major newspapers such as the China Times, United Daily News reported less than five, and usually the main culprit in these cases have been brought to justice, no matter how many implicated in corruption cases, and hundreds of people or the wide variety of levels, but that has never been a central high-level get involved, reports often states that central high-level official has been in their efforts to punish corruption; and corruption case has been reported for more than 1 day!
What it's going on? Taiwanese media are good at to expose corruption scandal? Aren’t we has stationed in mainland China? There are also many countries are stationed in mainland China. Mainland China has more than 2100 newspapers and 1300 radio stations, should have not reported? The mainland media is more open than before it? There are all directions of the Internet? Why they can report unconscionable food, super girl, various kinds of absurd social phenomena, but why not report these corruption cases which negative to the overall image of CPC? How come?
I recommend reading the book [the fog of censorship] can be downloaded at my live space http://cid-115bf68743f9f413.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/%E6%B0%91%E4%B8%BB%E8%BF%90%E5%8A%A8%20democracy%20movement
The book provides a detailed state-controlled media, a variety of laws, regulations, ban set command, the so-called sensitive issues of social, political, institutional issues, how highly control over domestic media, Internet media, and foreign journalists (including Taiwanese). At the same time, the book also tried to uncover the myth of the liberalization that foreign investors bring to media, multinational corporations and Internet companies on how to yield to the fact that China, the Chinese media, how to implement the Government's anti-American anti-imperialist and advocate nationalism, how to fabricate high-speed China's GDP the growth of the myth in recent years. The book collected a large number of records and analysis on CPC’s persecution of the media and journalists. These important issues will become a important subject on CPC’ system research and dissemination in the coming year.
After read this book, I feel bitter and angry, there is no freedom of press, independent judiciary, democratic system, freedom of speech, like a caged bird, it doesn’t matter of cage size, at the end still at the cage. What can we do before a truly free and democratic China arrives, what can we do for her? China's hopes are on those warriors who fight for freedom and against power. Of course includes those listed in the book that lose their life for freedom of speech, because of their efforts, it changes China bit to bit. I sincerely hope that the international community has less and less people who abandon their principles in order to benefit companies, groups or individuals, because the Chinese people need the international community, the enthusiasm of the strength of democracy and justice to help.
